The Wizard nebula was discovered by Caroline Lucretia Herschel in 1787. Caroline Herschel was an early pioneer for women in science. Among her accomplishments:

- First woman awarded a gold medal by the Royal Astronomical Society
- Awarded a Gold Medal for Science by the King of Prussia
- First woman named an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society
- Discovered eight comets between 1786 and 1797
